Governor DeSantis Backs Proposal to Eliminate Property Taxes in Florida
March 3, 2025
Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis has expressed support for eliminating property taxes, arguing that homeowners shouldn’t have to “pay rent to the government” to live on their own property. While Florida Republicans have introduced two related proposals—one to study the impact of elimination and another to raise the homestead exemption—critics warn that property taxes fund essential local services like schools, roads, and emergency response. Eliminating them would leave a $43 billion revenue gap, potentially leading to deep budget cuts or increased sales taxes. DeSantis acknowledged that such a move would require a constitutional amendment.
